Not Just Numbers: Two Stories That Found Their Ending
In tax and accounting, we often talk about deadlines, filings, and compliance. But behind every spreadsheet is a person. Behind every backlog is a story. And sometimes, those stories are messy, complicated, and deeply human.
I run a boutique tax and accounting practice. That means I work closely with individuals and business owners—not just to file returns, but to walk with them until everything is settled. Because life isn’t perfect. And tax doesn’t exist in isolation from the real world.
Here are two stories that stayed with me. They’re based on real cases, fictionalised to protect privacy. They’re not about success in the traditional sense. They’re about resolution. About relief. About what happens when someone finally gets to move on.
Story 1: A Clean Slate That Wasn’t
Years after being declared insolvent, a taxpayer continued filing returns as usual. He had rebuilt his life, moved forward, and assumed everything was in order.
But SARS requires a new tax number after sequestration—a detail he was never told.
One day, his tax profile collapsed. Years of filings were reversed. Penalties and interest appeared. He was flagged as non-compliant, and he had no idea why.
It was a confusing and distressing situation. But once the issue was properly addressed and the correct documentation submitted, a new tax number was issued. His filing history was restored, and the invalid debt entries were corrected.
The result? A clean profile. A fresh start. And the ability to move forward without fear or confusion.
Story 2: A Long Road to Closure
After selling his business, a former entrepreneur left the country to recover from a personal crisis. Years later, he returned to face what he had left behind—including a dormant company with several years of unfiled tax returns.
The backlog made resolution seem out of reach. Without those filings, SARS couldn’t consider any form of compromise, and the unfinished business lingered.
But once the account was brought up to date and the necessary submissions were made, the path to resolution opened. A compromise was approved, and his tax liability was reduced by over R300,000.
The result? A resolved account. A clear outcome. And the freedom to move forward without the weight of unresolved tax debt.
Why I’m Sharing This
These stories aren’t about shortcuts or heroics. They’re about what can go wrong—and what can go right. They’re about people who found themselves in difficult situations and wanted to do the right thing.
This is why I do what I do.
I’m not just filing returns—I’m walking with people through uncertainty, complexity, and sometimes chaos, until everything is settled. Because life isn’t perfect. And tax is part of life.
If you’ve been putting off your tax affairs because life got in the way, you’re not alone. Whether it’s a backlog, a dormant company, or a profile that no longer makes sense—there’s a way forward.
At Schlebusch Tax & Accounting, I don’t just file returns. I walk with you until everything is settled.
